This versatile open plan kitchen idea allows guests to host a dinner party away from their food preparation space – or continue their kitchen party into a dining room with a view over the shore. The listing was held by Marlene Okulick of Sotheby’s International Realty Pacific Palisades Brokerage. Betty White’s Brentwood home, which the late actress owned for more than half a century, just surfaced for sale at $10.575 million. After sharing news of the demolition, Mikelas ended her Instagram post on a positive note. Why demolish such a beautiful icons home not even a full year after her passing?! Construction is underway at the former site where Betty White's beloved Brentwood, California home once stood.

But she didn't live there long—her family moved to Alhambra, California, shortly after White turned one. After allowing the camera to take a sweeping view of her bedroom, the star quipped "This is where the magic happens," before the shot panned over to show a magician pulling a string of handkerchiefs from his sleeve. Designed by architect Richard Hicks, the light-filled home, which sits on the Monterey Peninsula, offers views of Point Lobos Nature Reserve, Ribera Beach, and Monastery Beach from almost all of the rooms. People this week reported on the sale of the home, which was listed in March.

"So honored to have been able to buy the big yellow front door to this home," comedian Chelcie Lynn commented on the post. The lot also included a three-car garage and a guesthouse, where White and Ludden were joined by Gloria and Jimmy Stewart and Dinah Shore and Burt Reynolds for games of charades, the spokesperson said. In December, the late actress' assistant, Kiersten Mikelas, posted a photo announcing that the home had been torn down.

The star offered a tour of one of her properties in a minute-long mock MTV Cribs-style video shared in 2017. She added, "Spending time in Carmel was one of Betty's favorite things to do. She enjoyed many treasured moments with her family and close friends." The 3,600-square-foot property includes four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. The property was originally listed in April, four months after the actress's death at 99, for $10.5 million.

The home, which was more than 3,000 square feet and had five bedrooms and six baths, was listed by Marlene Okulick of Sotheby's International Realty – Pacific Palisades Brokerage. According to the listing, the property was sold for "land value," meaning it was always set to be torn down once bought. This gorgeous oceanfront estate was actually built by Betty and her husband. White and her husband, a game show host, purchased the plot of land to build the charming abode for only $170,000 at the time, property records show. This week, the Carmel home of “Golden Girl” Betty White sold for $10.775 million, and now the beloved actress and comedian’s longtime home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles has been listed for $10.575 million.

Betty White's longtime home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles has sold for $10.678 million after just one month on the market, PEOPLE confirms. White’s assistant took to the actress’ social media, which she now maintains, on Sunday to announce that the Brentwood abode Betty bought in 1968 has been razed. White’s vacation home in Carmel, California, was also sold by her estate last year, The Wall Street Journal reported. The footprint of a new mansion is starting to take shape as framing for buildings is starting to appear on the property, the publication reported. Her Brentwood home, which she and her husband Allen Ludden purchased in 1968, was put on the market in June 2022, but only lasted a month before someone purchased it for $10.678 million, People magazine reported.

Before joining Future, Megan worked as a News Explainer at The Telegraph, following her MA in International Journalism at the University of Leeds. During her BA in English Literature and Creative Writing, she gained writing experience in the US while studying in New York. Megan also focused on travel writing during her time living in Paris, where she produced content for a French travel site. She currently lives in London with her antique typewriter and an expansive collection of houseplants.

The property was purchased by White and then-husband, Allen Ludden, in 1968 due to its close proximity to studios. The three-quarter-acre lot also included a three-car garage and a guesthouse, where White and Ludden were joined by Gloria and Jimmy Stewart and Dinah Shore and Burt Reynolds for games of charades, the spokesperson said. Ludden, who White had referred to as “the love her life,” had only spent a few nights at the home before he lost his battle to stomach cancer. Comprised of two bedrooms and five bathrooms, the coastal home spanned more than 3,600 square feet. Betty White's beloved beach house has found a buyer — for nearly $3 million more than it was asking. She first joined Future Plc as a News Writer across their interiors titles, including Livingetc and Real Homes, before becoming H&G's News Editor in April 2022.

She even turned down a job hosting The Today Show, because she didn't want to live in New York. Ludden convinced White to move to Chappaqua, New York, for a brief spell—Ludden lived there with his children. But White met Lucille Ball while filming Date with the Angeles, as the show was shot on the same lot as I Love Lucy. The two bonded over working in a male-dominated industry and became life-long friends.

But it’s also been renovated with central air and security systems, making it well-suited to buyers looking for “a fully updated home of great scale and comfort in which to enjoy a totally 21st-century lifestyle,” Golubock adds. Vivian and her husband, stockbroker Herbert Adolph Scheftel, commissioned up-and-coming architect John Russell Pope—who later designed the Jefferson Memorial and numerous Gilded Age homes—to complete alterations to the interior. Architect Richard Hicks designed the Hollywood couple’s dream home, with nearly every window offering panoramic views of the Ribera Beach, Monastery Beach, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.

A Look at All of Betty White's Homes

Months after the death of Golden Girls star Betty White, her estate is selling the legend’s Carmel, California, home for $7.95 million. She continued her pioneering roles both in front of and behind the camera with the short-lived NBC talk show “The Betty White Show” in 1954. The family moved to California a few years later — eventually winding up in Los Angeles, where the future star grew up in the shadow of Hollywood. White held the record for the longest TV career of any entertainer, making her debut in 1939 when the medium was just an experiment and going on to appear as an actress, host and in-demand guest well into her 90s. The Los Angeles lair, as well as her home in Carmel, were known to have stuffed-animal rooms. She had a lifelong love of real animals, but she mentioned her love for the stuffed variety in her book “If You Ask Me,” published in 2011.

The coveted flat lot, which is located in Brentwood Park, sports "huge parklike grounds," and views of the mountains and the nearby Getty Museum, according to an original listing. New photos show workers moving dirt and framing buildings on the nearly three-quarter acre property, which White called home for more than 50 years. White had initially wanted to become a forest ranger, because of her love for animals, but that wasn't a viable career path for women at the time.

White, who passed away on Friday morning, lived in a five-bedroom, six-bathroom Brentwood home, located in West Los Angeles. White died New Year’s Eve in the home at the age of 99 – 17 days shy of her 100th birthday – after suffering a stroke days earlier. Following a dream career in Hollywood that included unforgettable roles on The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, White enjoyed a quiet life playing crossword puzzles and card games. Designed by architect Richard Hicks, White's midcentury-style home boasts sweeping panoramic views of the Point Lobos Nature Reserve, Ribera Beach, and Monastery Beach from nearly every room in the house. According to the home's listing, the town was founded as an artist's colony and maintains much of that bohemian spirit, even as its become a popular tourist destination known for shopping dining and charming European-style cottages. Both buyer and seller of the Carmel property were represented by Nicole Truszkowski and Zak Freedman of Sotheby’s International Realty Carmel Brokerage.

More discreet than its supertall neighbors, the 20-story building offers luxurious living with Central Park views. It’s ideal for those who “crave the excitement of the city but also value their privacy and quiet,” Soloviev Group chair Stefan Soloviev said in a statement. In 2012, White revealed to AD that her favorite room in the house was the den. “It’s warm and cozy and decorated in gold-pink to match my golden retriever,” she said.

Betty White was born January 17, 1922 – making Betty White age 99 at her passing. She was only weeks away from reaching her 100th birthday, which the beloved icon planned to host a televised event in celebration of. The 3-story residence offers 3,600 square feet of living space, 4 bedrooms and 4 and a half bathrooms. In June, the property sold for $10.678 million after just one month on the market. The Hollywood legend and her late husband Allen Ludden bought the property in 1968, according to The Wall Street Journal. But if the trailblazing actress had it her way, she would have remained at her longtime marital home in Carmel, which she first built with her late husband, Allen Ludden, when they bought the land in 1978.

Betty White's Beloved Brentwood, Calif. Home of More Than 50 Years Sells for $10.6 Million

While she never had biological children, however, Betty did have three stepchildren with husband, Allen Ludden. Following her passing, one main question everyone asked at the time was “How did Betty White die? ”Betty White passed away on December 31st, 2021 following a stroke she suffered on Christmas day.

Located in an upscale community in Brentwood, Calif, the 2-story residence boasted 3,000 square feet as well as 5 spacious bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. "Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever," Witjas told PEOPLE in a statement. She died at her home there on Dec. 31, just a few weeks shy of her centennial birthday, her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed to PEOPLE. White and her husband, Allen Ludden, built the three-story waterfront house, located in the picturesque town of Carmel, Calif., together, but he died in 1981 shortly after it was completed. The 3,621-square-foot home – that sits on the fringe of Ribera and Monastery Beach – is a maze of natural decorating ideas that bring the 1970s property into contemporary California. The property has walls of glass and organic building materials, including light wood walls and ceilings and a statement stone fireplace in the living room.

Although prospective owners were unable to get interior access to the 3,029-square-foot dwelling during visits, it was known to contain a room stuffed with stuffed animals, a product of White’s lifelong love of animals. White bought a 0.28-acre plot with her beloved husband, game show host Allen Ludden, in 1978. But he died from stomach cancer shortly after the rustic three-story abode was completed. Her oceanfront estate in Carmel, Calif., went on the market for $7.95 million, and the oceanside property is lavish. White died in December of 2021 at the age of 99, and her charming, but surprisingly modest home in the exclusive Brentwood Park area of Los Angeles was listed for sale for $10,575,000 in April of 2022. Online property listings show the house sold on June 2 for $10,678,000, which breaks down to $3,491 per square foot and a monthly payment of $55,806.

The property is being sold for land value only, however, and there is no interior access to the house. Property was listed today as a tear down, with only the exterior available for potential buyers to tour. The home was reportedly White’s primary residence since she and Ludden moved in in the 1960s, about ten years after the colonial-style five bedroom, six bathroom house was built. Bright yellow shutters and white siding fit make the home perfectly suited to the sunny locale, as does the swimming pool. The listing was marketed as a teardown, explicitly noting the charming property would be sold for land value, giving buyers the opportunity to construct a new building on the flat lot, The Post reported at the time.

Light wood paneling and wall-to-wall carpeting complement the natural beauty. The real-life home where the show was filmed sold for $4 million in 2020. With a white wooden exterior and yellow shutters, the 3,029-square-foot spread, built in 1952, stands on about three-quarters of an acre, according to Realtor. Shortly before her death, White talked to PEOPLE exclusively about she was feeling about her upcoming birthday. "I'm so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age," the veteran actress said. In June, the Brentwood address sold for $10.678 million, People reported.

In addition, we introduce ghost opposition-based learning to help MCOA escape the local optimal trap. Traditional opposition-based learning (Mahdavi et al. 2018) is based on the central point and carries out opposition-based learning in a fixed format. Most of the points gather near the central point and their positions will not exceed the distance between the current point and the central point, and most solutions will be close to the optimal individual. However, if the optimal individual is not near the current exploration point, the algorithm will fall into local optimal and it is difficult to find the optimal solution. The Crayfish Optimization Algorithm (COA) (Jia et al. 2023b) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm rooted in the concept of population survival wisdom, introduced by Heming Jia et al. in 2023.

In summary, wrapper methods provide a more sophisticated and problem-specific approach to feature selection, enabling the algorithm to achieve its maximum potential by selecting the most relevant and informative features for the given task. In this subsection, the wrapper method in high-dimensional feature selection is elucidated, employing the classification error rate (CEE) (Wang et al. 2005) as an illustrative example. CEE is utilized as the fitness function or objective function to assess the optimization effectiveness of the feature selection algorithm for the problem at hand. By using CEE as the fitness function, the wrapper method evaluates different feature subsets based on their performance in the context of the KNN algorithm. This approach enables the algorithm to identify the most relevant features that lead to the lowest classification error rate, thereby optimizing the model's performance.

For constrained engineering problems, MCOA is improved by 11.16%, 1.46%, 0.08% and 0.24%, respectively, compared with COA. For feature selection problems, the average fitness value and accuracy are improved by 55.23% and 10.85%, respectively. MCOA shows better optimization performance in solving complex spatial and practical application problems.

By focusing on the accuracy of classification in a specific algorithmic context, the wrapper method ensures that the selected features are highly tailored to the problem and the chosen learning algorithm. This targeted feature selection process enhances the overall performance and effectiveness of the algorithm in handling high-dimensional data. Compared with other algorithms, MCOA achieved the best results in average fitness value, standard deviation of fitness value and Friedman ranking. In unimodal function F1, although MCOA algorithm is slightly worse than LSHADE algorithm, MCOA is superior to other algorithms in mean fitness value, standard deviation of fitness value, Friedman ranking and other aspects. In the multimodal functions F2 and F3, although the average fitness value of MCOA is slightly worse, it also achieves a good result of ranking second. The standard deviation of fitness value in F3 is better than other comparison algorithms in terms of stability.

Factors leading to success include ensuring there is a contractor that can execute the plan of the design-build team, incorporating innovation including considering alternative technical concepts, and having a knowledgeable, engaged owner. Time is saved on procurement and project management in design-build because the project owner contracts with the design-builder to provide both design and construction services in one package. Yes, if discussions are held, they must be conducted with all offerors in the competitive range. If you wish to hold discussions and do not formally establish a competitive range, then you must hold discussions with all responsive offerors. However, any exchange of information must be consistent with State procurement integrity requirements. Interested parties include potential offerors, end users, acquisition and supporting personnel, and others involved in the conduct or outcome of the acquisition. Weighted criteria process means a form of best value selection in which maximum point values are pre-established for qualitative and price components, and award is based upon high total points earned by the offerors. Technical proposal means that portion of a design-build proposal which contains design solutions and other qualitative factors that are provided in response to the RFP document.

In order to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of MCOA in feature selection, we conducted comparative tests using MCOA as well as several other algorithms including COA, SSA, PSO, ABC, WSA (Baykasoğlu et al. 2020), FPA (Yang 2012), and ABO (Qi et al. 2017) on 12 datasets. In this section of the experiment, the fitness value of each algorithm was calculated, and the convergence curve, feature selection accuracy (FS Accuracy), and selected feature size for each algorithm were analyzed. Figures 10, 11 and 12 display the feature selection (FS) convergence curve, FS Accuracy, and selected feature size for the eight algorithms across the 12 datasets. From these figures, it is evident that the optimization ability and prediction accuracy of the MCOA algorithm surpass those of the other seven comparison algorithms. 11 and 12, MCOA selected 20 features, while the other seven algorithms selected more than 2000 features.

The contracting procedures of this part apply to all design-build project funded under title 23, U.S.C. Where X denotes feat, Y denotes label, both X and Y are specific features in the given data model, and D is the total number of features recorded. When Q ≤ (C3 + 1)/2, it indicates that the food size is suitable for the crayfish to eat directly at this time, and the crayfish will directly move towards the food location and eat directly. When the temperature is greater than 30 °C and rand ≥ 0.5, it indicates that the crayfish have other crayfish competing with them for the cave when they search for the cave for summer.

Book review: Alix E Harrow's 'Starling House' Gothic fantasy novel : NPR

If the agreement is not received, the guest should contact the property management company at the number on the booking confirmation. Possibly for the sake of authenticity, Melissa McCarthy (who essays Lilly), was not informed of the sounds the director was going to make, which led to a genuinely surprised reaction from her during the filming of a crucial scene. Melfi also researched the specific bird calls made by starlings so he could mimic them authentically as well. The hilly landscape around Lilly’s home also seems to be from this area, and filming was likely carried out on location in the outskirts of the city. The bird that plays a central role in Lilly’s journey of acceptance and hope is CGI, but to help his actors, the director Theodore Melfi made loud bird calls off-camera during filming. The film, in its entirety, is set in a handful of locations, and filming was likely done on-location (as opposed to a studio) for most of the scenes.

Starling House (A Reese's Book Club Pick)

As Eleanor’s own version of events unfolds, the narrative reveals that Eleanor was the daughter of one of the Gravely brothers, all of whom mistreated her. The beasts of the Underland were created from her dreams and would later cause the deaths of the Gravelys. After a few weeks at Starling House, Opal is approached by a woman named Elizabeth who claims to be helping the local power company, Gravely Power, to research unspecified anomalies connected to the house. In response to Elizabeth’s threats against her safety, Opal is coerced into taking pictures and making notes on the house. The big, churning wheels of this lusciously plotted book begin to quickly turn when Opal takes a job cleaning for Starling House’s current owner, a reclusive young man named Arthur Starling.

External review score

"Women's anger is something that had to be shoved into horror, or really only had a place in horror and Gothic, because it was naturally antithetical to the way things were supposed to be," Harrow says. According to town lore, Eleanor murdered her husband and used his money to build the terrifying and strange mansion that haunts them all. The history that comes bubbling up to the surface in "Starling House" is Kentucky's involvement in slavery.

For Alix E. Harrow, writing 'Starling House' meant telling a new story of Kentucky

It’s been eleven years and forty-four days since I last opened that book. I came straight home from Mom’s funeral, dumped it into a doubled-up grocery bag along with half a pack of Newports, a moldy dream catcher, and a tube of lipstick, and shoved it all deep under my bed. But sinister forces are digging deeper into the buried secrets of Starling House, and Arthur’s own nightmares have become far too real. As Eden itself seems to be drowning in its own ghosts, Opal realizes that she might finally have found a reason to stick around. When she gets the chance to step inside Starling House–and make some extra cash for her brother’s escape fund–she can’t resist.

There isn’t a lot to do in a town like Eden, and I didn’t have many friends my own age. It’s generally hoped that both they and their house will fall into a sinkhole and rot at the bottom, neither mourned nor remembered, and—perhaps—release the town from its century-long curse. I should be scared—there are stories about Starling House, the kind people only tell at night, half-whispered under the hum of the porch light—but in the dream I don’t hesitate. Starling House is a gorgeously modern gothic fantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Reading Group Choices selects discussible books and suggests discussion topics for reading groups. "In my family stories, it's magically scrubbed clean of where wealth came from or who worked the land," Harrow says.

The Starling Filming Locations

Gothic fantasy author Ava Reid says "Starling House" exemplifies what Gothic fiction can offer people struggling with pain and trauma. So I spent a lot of weekends sitting cross-legged on the motel mattress with my little brother, making up haunted house stories until both of us were so thoroughly spooked we’d scream at the sound of a doorknob turning three rooms down. I used to type up the best ones, in the secret hours after midnight, when Jasper was asleep and Mom was out, but I never sent them anywhere.2 I quit all that years ago, anyway. They have money—which generally excuses everything short of homicide—but it doesn’t come from either coal or tobacco, and nobody seems able to marry into it. The Starling family tree is a maddening sprawl of grafted limbs and new shoots, full of out-of-towners and strangers who turned up at the front gates and claimed the Starling name without ever setting foot in Eden itself.

And finally, a review

When their mother died, teenage Opal faked her way into getting custody of her younger brother, Jasper, and years later Opal and Jasper are still struggling to make ends meet. Jasper is an exceptionally bright and creative boy, and Opal desperately wants to scrape together enough money to send him out of Eden to a fancy private school with all the resources he deserves. Opal has always been mysteriously drawn to Starling House, a big old mansion shrouded in rumor and local legend. When she encounters the house’s reclusive owner, Arthur Starling, she talks her way into the opportunity of a lifetime. Arthur is willing to pay Opal enough money to send Jasper to school; in return, she gets to explore—while cleaning—the house she’s been dying to see for as long as she can remember. Harrow has a gift for turning settings into characters, as she does with both the strangely alive Starling House and the working-class town of Eden.

starling house

Harrow's Eden is notable for its looming and sinister manor owned by the reclusive Starling family.

starling house

The fine printMust-know information for guests at this property

Ultimately, the two return to the real Starling House less haunted by the past and less fearful of the future. Though rumors still circulate around the two residents of Starling House, the town of Eden comes to accept them and begins to grapple with the horrors of its past. Opal also learns that she and Jasper are descended from the Gravelys and that the accident that killed her mother was inadvertently caused by Arthur and the beasts.

Harrow has tons of fun along the way, noting in Eleanor Starling’s Wikipedia page, for instance, that “director Guillermo del Toro has praised E. A young woman’s experience as a nurse in Vietnam casts a deep shadow over her life. "It is constantly telling and obscuring many different variations of stories about itself."

"One of the reasons that I had found that difficult to do before is because I find it to be a place of very mixed experiences that I love very, very, very much, and which has just an incredible violence and terror to it." She and Arthur individually contemplate Eleanor’s dedication of The Underland, which suggested that her readers should “befriend” the deadly creatures. In an attempt to protect Eden from the beasts, Arthur goes into the Underland. Once there, Opal meets Eleanor Starling herself, who tells Opal the truth about the legends that surround her.

Opal continues to hear different legends about the Starlings and the Gravelys, including stories about the Gravely family’s history with enslavement and abuse. One night, Opal dreams that Starling House and Arthur are under attack. Rushing to the property, she discovers one of the beasts from The Underland and kills it, then forces Arthur to tell her everything he knows about the house. Arthur tells her that Eleanor Starling believed the Underland and its beasts to be real.

Opal works hard at Tractor Supply Company to try to save enough money to send her younger brother, Jasper, to a fancy boarding school. Their mother died a mysterious death, their father has never been in the picture and they live in a dingy motel room in the dying town of Eden, Kentucky. Opal is desperate to escape Eden, which offers nothing much besides two Dollar Generals and a strip-mined stretch of riverbank, thanks to the operations of nearby Gravely Power. They started abruptly when I was twelve or thirteen, just when all the characters in my books started manifesting magic powers or receiving coded messages or whatever; of course I was obsessed with them. But Opal, the main character of the book, desperately needs the money to get her brother out of poverty, so she takes a job at Starling House. ‘The Starling’ on Netflix is an emotional drama with a hint of well-timed comedy.

The film follows a couple’s journey as they grapple with the devastating loss of their young daughter. While the husband, Jack, gets committed into a psychiatric institution, his wife Lilly attempts to hold down the fort and maintain their home. However, Lilly, already struggling with her own grief, soon finds herself tormented by a tenacious little bird that keeps attacking her. Poole says that from its very beginnings in the 18th century, Gothic fiction has responded to historical trauma. The only thing she left behind other than The Underland was that house, hidden in the trees.

Where Was The Starling Filmed? Netflix Filming Locations

starling house

Carefully unpacking the institutionalized power dynamics of class and race, Harrow untangles the many mysteries of Starling House, revealing how powerful people and groups will twist the truth until the story suits their purposes. Despite this warning, however, Opal continues to feel drawn to Starling House and eventually takes on the position of housekeeper for the dilapidated property. She quickly learns that Starling House and its owner are just as mysterious as the people of Eden believe, but despite the ominous air of mystery that surrounds the place, Opal starts to feel at home there. Eleanor is also rumored to have killed her husband, John Gravely, and his two brothers. Since her mysterious death, Starling House has been continually inhabited by unique yet unrelated characters whose activities have raised suspicions that cultish elements of witchcraft and Satanism must be present amongst the residents of Eden. Written by Hugo Award–winning author Alix E. Harrow in 2023, Starling House is a Southern Gothic work of speculative fiction about finding a place to call home.

The fine printMust-know information for guests at this property

The dying coal town is the fictional setting of Alix E. Harrow's "Starling House," and the smog of fading power and bad luck is enough to suffocate its residents, most of whom live in abject poverty. In the small town of Eden, Kentucky, rumors and legends surround the supposedly haunted property of Starling House and its enigmatic former residents. With the exception of Opal, the citizens of Eden are also fearful of the Starling land and its current inhabitant, Arthur Starling. Struggling to support herself and her younger brother, Jasper, Opal feels like an outsider in the community and frequently dreams of Starling House. One day, feeling physically drawn to the house, she approaches the gates and meets Arthur, who tells her to run away. The town of Eden blames its bad luck on Eleanor Starling, the mysterious 19th-century author who first owned Starling House.

Book excerpt: 'Starling House'

The film’s production crew also spent a few days in California, where scenes featuring Lilly’s family home were likely filmed. Lensing was undertaken in the city of Calabasas, which is located in the Santa Monica Mountains region of southern California. “Women's anger is something that had to be shoved into horror, or really only had a place in horror and Gothic, because it was naturally antithetical to the way things were supposed to be,” Harrow says. Harrow’s Eden is notable for its looming and sinister manor owned by the reclusive Starling family. I figure dreams are like stray cats, which will go away if I quit feeding them.

Gothic fantasy author Ava Reid says “Starling House” exemplifies what Gothic fiction can offer people struggling with pain and trauma. I still dream about the Starling place sometimes, but I no longer think it means anything. And even if it did—I’m a high-school dropout with a part-time job at Tractor Supply, bad teeth, and a brother who deserves better than this dead-end bad-luck bullshit town. Reassuring Eleanor that she believes her story, Opal helps Eleanor to reconcile with her past and also does the same for Arthur, who struggles with his own nightmares of the Underland and the deaths of his parents.

Starling House (A Reese's Book Club Pick)

The story focuses on Opal, an impoverished woman struggling to free herself and her brother from their prejudiced small town. When she accepts a job as a housekeeper at the mysterious Starling House, she begins to fall for its equally mysterious inhabitant, Arthur Starling, as the property’s deeper secrets begin to reveal themselves. Exploring themes of truth, power, and choice, Harrow uses the novel to examine how the very act of storytelling can be used to grapple with the effects of the past.

A few residential neighborhoods around the city were also seemingly used for establishing shots near the beginning of the film as Lilly drives to work and narrowly misses hitting the bird that later torments her. Despite the film being set in California, filming was majorly undertaken in New York City, New York. The psychiatric institution where Jack is admitted also seems to be in the Big Apple, as is the grocery store where Lilly is seen working. And the pain buried underneath Eleanor’s story is at the core of what sickens the whole town. The history that comes bubbling up to the surface in “Starling House” is Kentucky’s involvement in slavery. So I don’t make up stories about Starling House or ask anyone else for theirs.

How many guests can sleep at Starling Lake House?

But sometimes, right before I fall asleep, I see the black shadows of trees rising up the motel walls, though there’s nothing but asphalt and weeds out the window. I feel the hot breath of Beasts around me, and I follow them down, and down, to Underland. Since nobody would tell me the story of Starling House, I made up my own.

"I had to learn many things about my own family and about my own home in undergrad and grad school." "There's a line in 'Starling House' that I think sums up everything that I would want to say about the Gothic genre, which is, one girl's pain has been transmuted into generations of beautiful, terrible, unsettling art," Reid says. "That's what Gothic really is to me. It's this almost refuge for people who want to create meaningful and beautiful art from pain." In writing about class, Harrow joins a long tradition of authors writing Gothic fiction as a way to process the ills of society. "I think what I wanted to say about class and poverty is that poverty is a form of violence and horror in and of itself," Harrow says, "and that those experiences do emotional and physical harm." Guests will receive a rental agreement, which must be signed and returned directly to the property prior to arrival.

Opal finds herself increasingly intrigued by Arthur despite his odd ways and off-putting looks. But Gravely Power representative Elizabeth Baine, in hopes of obtaining the mineral rights to Arthur’s land, demands that Opal spy on Arthur and his residence, threatening Jasper’s future if she declines. The trauma of history is a bitter stain on the coal-dusted town of Eden, Kentucky. And while residents of the town may be determined to turn a blind eye, readers will find it impossible to look away.

Proceeding on her conviction that Starling House served as an entrance to the Underland itself, Eleanor tried to fight against these beasts and claimed to be the Warden of Starling House. Arthur declares that he is determined to be the last Warden of Starling House, for he does not want anyone else to have to fight the beasts and risk being killed by them, as his parents were. Opal uncovers many different versions of the same stories about the house and its inhabitants, past and present, and the truth is hard to sort out. “The Gravelys are either victims or villains; Eleanor Starling is either a wicked woman or a desperate girl. Eden is either cursed, or merely getting its comeuppance,” she concludes. The dying coal town is the fictional setting of Alix E. Harrow’s “Starling House,” and the smog of fading power and bad luck is enough to suffocate its residents, most of whom live in abject poverty.

I don’t linger when I pass by the iron front gates, or look up with my heart riding high in my chest, hoping to catch a glimpse of that lonely amber light that seems to shine from some grander, stranger world, just for me. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. A new month means its time for some of our favorite things — coats and totes full of the best new young adult books of September 2023. And the pain buried underneath Eleanor's story is at the core of what sickens the whole town.

The result is an unconventional design that is interesting to look at, and shows that this event will be fun and modern. A simple way to organize the information on your flyer is to divide each section into its own box. For example, you could have one box for the title, one box for the event details, and a box with a description of the event. Icons can seem overwhelming if you’re new to design, but once you understand their purpose, icons are super easy to use.

Let people know how much they’ll have to shell out for your event directly on the flyer. If your event is a bargain, you can emphasize the price in the middle of your flyer. If it’s a little pricier, you may want to include some selling points besides the price. Don’t be afraid to bring out the glitter in your event flyer. Pick a color scheme that reflects all of the silver and gold guests can expect.

At .005", this thicker stock reduces the risk of your flyers folding or creasing during transport, maximizing your brand image when it's time for delivery. Look for words or phrases related to your product or message that can be twisted or combined in a clever way. Embrace wordplay and create puns that bring a smile to people’s faces. Here’s how you create an advertising flyer that can easily capture attention and spark interest. Blue and green should never be seen, but blue and yellow is a winning combination. By using contrasting colors and interesting shops this flyer has a modern and stylish look, whilst still looking professional.

This will help inform all of your real estate marketing including your real estate flyers. These pairs are known as complementary colors because they go well together. That’s why, if you’re not sure which colors to pick for your event flyer design, complementary colors are a good place to start.

Your contact information can include your company’s physical address, phone number, social media profiles, and website URL. If your call to action involves making contact with your business, it’s important that you put the contact information front and center on the flyer. Whether you’re running a B2C business or a B2C business, you can use flyers to attract customers and drive revenue. You can mail out the flyers, put them up in high-traffic areas or bring them to conferences. On our design tool, select "2 Sides Different" under the "Printed Sides" dropdown menu.

Create engaging feedback forms using our interactive online form builder. To make a bold statement, consider adding special effects like foil stamping or using unique paper stocks. Advertise your hair salon with this stunning template that will instantly attract prospective customers.

While it’s true that a smiling person will take up a lot of space on your flyer, the space will be well-used. You can create the most beautiful flyer in the world, but it won’t be effective if you don’t have a strategy behind it. Before you start designing your flyer, think bout what you want the flyer to accomplish. The 16 Best Slippers for Women of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Plus, the fur will naturally mat over time, so don’t worry if they feel a bit tight at first. These trendy and comfortable slipper slides from Ugg are perfect for any occasion. Some slippers are strictly for the indoors, but these Uggs are stylish and can be worn outside as well. The sandal-slipper hybrid is made of shearling and has a one-inch platform. The unisex Kolo House Shoes come in a variety of fun colors and materials (like fur-lined corduroy and wool tweed); they are essentially fluffy, reversible socks that you can throw in the washer.

Sheepskin and suede slippers

The lining feels soft and cozy, and there's a foam footbed, so they're more supportive on hardwood floors than a regular pair of flip flops. Selling more than 4 million pairs of these moccasins in the past five years, L.L. Bean has people flocking to these true-to-size slip-ons lined with cozy shearling and decked out with a suede outer and a durable rubber sole.

Minnetonka Cally Faux Fur Slipper

Here is a selection of four-star and five-star reviews from customers who were delighted with the products they found in this category. Commerce Editor Jacqueline Saguin closely collaborated with Wu to source expert recommendations and commentary. Executive Director Lexie Sachs wrote this original round-up, leveraging her own years-long expertise within the footwear space. Glerups slippers come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty (PDF), which covers defects. If you buy them through L.L.Bean, they’ll also fall under L.L.Bean’s satisfaction guarantee.

What should I look for in the best slippers with arch support?

They are durable with a molded EVA outsole designed with a tread pattern for added traction, making them great for both indoors and out. While technically not slippers, these look and feel just as cozy as house shoes – i.e. you can get away with wearing them for everyday use, which can substantiate the higher price. In fact, when we reviewed Allbirds, testers on our panel gave this pair perfect scores for comfort. The shoes are made with Merino wool, which feels softer than regular wool and has temperature-regulating capabilities to prevent overheating. Whether you're dealing with warm temperatures or are prone to sweaty feet, these flip flops offer the comfort of a slipper while letting feet breathe.

Glerups the Slip-On Leather Slipper

We then combined this testing data with our research and compiled a list of our favorite slippers for every type of slipper wearer. Parachute recommends washing these slippers with towels, and we found this hack works excellently. The slip-on style mimics slippers you may find at a spa, which brings some spa-like luxury into your daily routine. Wool naturally repels dirt, but you can keep your Glerups looking their best by vacuuming them periodically.

Plush women’s sheepskin slippers

They’re also not exceptionally supportive—another reason they are best for working from home or lounging. As with all Uggs, they may feel a bit snug at first, however, as you wear them, the fur mats down and contours to your foot for a perfect fit. After six months of wear, we found the stretching minimal and the fit consistently perfect. Other Uggs tend to feel heavy, but we found these to be rather lightweight, causing us to forget we even had them on. The faux fur lining of the Sorel Women’s Nakiska Scuff Slipper was stiflingly warm, and we’ve read multiple customer complaints about quality issues, including defective stitching.

Similar to the other Ugg slippers we tested, there is a bit of a break-in period as you wait for the fur to mat and mold to your foot. We walked for a full day throughout New York City without an issue. The combination of the plush fur and open back makes these equally warm and breathable. While you definitely can wear socks, we did not wear any when testing these and found the cozy slippers warmed us up in a half hour or so.

L.L.Bean Wicked Good Moccasins

Double down on the puffer trend with these surprisingly practical slippers designed by The North Face. We appreciate that the thick rubber sole provides traction for walking around outside. In our evaluations, this pair ran a bit small, so we recommend sizing an entire digit up.

They are made with a water-resistant upper, a rugged chain-tread outsole for added traction, and triple-needle stitching for durability. The slippers are perfect for newspaper runs and dog walks, along with lounging around the house. And most importably, the thick EVA insole is padded for extra comfort, but removable if you want to add your own custom inserts. You may have seen an Instagram ad or two for these high-tech ultra-comfy house slippers. They are made with 360-degree comfort and something called "triple stack technology" that provides three layers of cushion to support the foot. A furry take on classic Crocs, these slides offer the same comfiness synonymous of the brand with the addition of a cozy liner.

house slippers for women

These slippers have a rubber sole, not quite as thick and supportive as Ugg alternatives, but they still provide ample support for simple tasks and chores around the house. Vionic’s iconic orthotic footbed felt like walking on a thick, plush carpet with every step. We were stunned by the impressive arch support that was hard to find in other slippers we tested. The midsole and outsole keep your feet supported without pain even when walking for hours, performing chores, or cooking dinner. The adjustability is also a game-changer for pregnant women whose foot size may fluctuate over time.

This is especially true for anyone who might have foot pain or soreness. These slippers remain extremely comfortable and supportive after six months. Ugg's signature rubber sole remains a consistent and durable choice for performing chairs around the house or even walking outdoors. As cute and cozy-looking as some slippers are, many are made for strictly comfort and play no part in your body’s health and alignment.

The good news is that if you're feeling pain in your knees or feet, wearing slippers at home can help. Birdie’s shoes have a 7-layer footbed for optimal comfort, but be aware that these do come with a small 15 mm heel. This is rather small compared to other brands like Birkenstock which have a 26 mm heel and the Bronax Pillow slides, which have the highest heel of 1.7 inches. Thus, we found these may be better for a “shoe that feels like a slipper” rather than the other way around. They come in black or cream, so you can guarantee they’ll match everything, and for a bit more money you can add a monogram, which is a great option for a personalized gift. The classic suede design looks sleek and sophisticated but also comes in fun patterns and colors to elevate any work-from-home outfit.

But, after wearing these for six months, we're happy to report that they look and smell just as great as they did upon opening the box. We were also worried about them attracting dirt, but the shearling appears unchanged. Each size spans a few traditional shoe sizes, so you may end up getting a pair that is slightly too big. While we love the sleek look, absorbent nature, and easy washing instructions, we did find that they slipped a lot during the day.

We found that these never felt sweaty or uncomfortable, but we would reach for another slipper on particularly chilly winter days. Sometimes, the only thing standing between you and pain-free feet is proper arch support. For ample support from a trusted brand, we love the Vionic Gemma slippers.

Additionally, the federal government has a goal of awarding 5% of federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses each year. However, it has only met that goal twice since it was established over 20 years ago. All classes were held virtually on Monday for safety reasons, and a day later the administration announced that students would have the option to finish the semester remotely. The decision to offer hybrid classes appeared to acknowledge that the disputes at the center of campus tension were unlikely to be resolved before the end of the school year.

Like clouds on your feet, these fleece slippers' memory foam footbed also had reviewers attesting as much (plus, they're machine washable). It includes a rubber sole for traction and a closed back to keep feet secure, unlike slip-on slides. The Ugg Dakota (women’s) and Ugg Ascot (men’s) moccasins both felt well made, with a durable rubber sole for outdoor wear. Alas, the shearling fleece wasn’t as soft as that of the L.L.Bean Wicked Good Moccasins, and the sizing runs frustratingly small. The Wicked Good Moccasins are some of the coziest and most comfortable slippers we’ve ever worn. By contrast, the Minnetonka Pile Lined Hardsole moccasins lost their fluffiness in less than two weeks, and the shearling in the Ugg Dakota moccasins was so thick that our feet barely fit inside them.

Slippers with arch support may sound like a bunch of not-so-cute orthopedic shoes, but they don't have to be. The slide design is convenient for walking both indoors and outdoors, and they have ample traction on all surfaces. These TikTok-viral slippers come in tons of funky colors and are less expensive than the many options we tried. If you want to be cozy and warm, you can always add a pair of cozy socks for the best of both worlds. If you love a cozy slipper on a cold night but always find yourself sweaty after a few hours, these slippers we tested are for you. The material is 100 percent Turkish cotton, which is similar to a towel, so it will absorb your feet’s moisture making them ideal for stepping out of the shower.

They’re the fluffiest and most breathable of all the sheepskin shearling styles we’ve tried, and they have supportive rubber soles that hold up to outdoor use. With their combination of warmth, comfort, and durability, it’s no wonder these slippers have been a pick since 2016. On the other hand, some shearling or faux fur options can look matted or show wear after months of use. We found this with our favorite moccasins, the Minnetonka Women’s Cally Faux Fur Slipper, which mats and molds to your foot over time. Also, a quality rubber sole, seen on many Ugg slippers is a way to ensure great traction and that your feet stay firmly planted on the ground. We would not recommend wearing these outdoors, but if that happens, you’ll be happy to know that these are easily machine-washable.

In our tests, we found that they kept feet cool without sacrificing comfort. One GH tester said they eased their legs after running, while another reported less knee pain since they'd started wearing them. You can also lean into the brand's more classic slippers with their fuzzy mule option that's ideal for colder weather. Sometimes, all your tired, achy feet need is the sweet relief of warm, cozy slippers. Going barefoot — especially on hardwood floors — can wreak havoc on your feet and joints because there's no shock absorption.

They’re not made with animal products, but synthetic fleece is less breathable than wool, so they may cause sweaty feet. If you work from home or are simply coming home from a long day, chances are, your feet ache. A good pair ideally cradles and cushions your feet and makes life’s mundane activities, like grabbing the mail and having a TV marathon, all the more relaxing. What’s more, if you manage issues like plantar fasciitis or pronation, a pair of supportive slippers for scuffling around the house can provide long-lasting relief. House slippers not only feel cozy and comfortable on your feet, but they can contribute to your overall health, longevity, and pain levels—yes, even when you’re relaxing at home.

These stylish slippers are available in classic brown and black, or bright pink and purple—something to appeal to everyone. The hard sole can take a few days to get used to, but the durability and warmth of this choice make it worth the buy. After three months of daily wear, the lining has matted and worn down by the heel, which is to be expected with constant use. Still, they feel just as comfortable and warm as the first time we wore them. While we did not test these slippers personally, we were impressed by the low price point, spa-like design, and plush lining. We love the idea of buying a few pairs of these slippers to travel with or keep in a guest room.

“After two years, I still wear my Glerups every day, travel with them, and even bring them over to people’s houses when I’m visiting,” raved one Wirecutter staffer. They’re available in numerous colors (10 women’s, six men’s) and two widths (the wider of which is only available in brown). The women’s version is embellished with a thick, shearling collar; the men’s is not, so it looks a bit more understated. This bipartisan bill is designed to ensure federal contracting dollars intended for women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) are awarded to those firms that meet the U.S.

The best slippers for your feet usually have a grippy outsole, a comfortable and supportive footbed, and most importantly, arch support. This pair of slippers from ocean lifestyle-inspired brand Olukai is meant to take you from the couch to coffee runs. They feature ultra-puffy shearling for cozy comfort and a grippy sole that can handle slippery surfaces and pavement. Plus, the anatomically-contoured footbeds provide ideal support for the natural curve of an arch. After six months, these slippers look nearly identical to how they looked during our first wear. Though not the most supportive slippers on our list, the memory foam remains plush and comfortable for everyday wear.

We found them to be extremely comfortable, despite not having dedicated arch support. Whether you are looking for slippers with faux fur lining, arch support, or a fun design, your perfect pair is out there, and we’re here to help you find it. With Mother's Day coming, we think slippers are a great cozy present for a woman you love.

Vionic is a podiatrist-backed brand that prioritizes foot health above all else. This cozy, closed-toe pair has a special footbed that contours to the feet's natural arches. These supportive kicks are so well-loved, they received the APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association) Seal of Acceptance. That moment you can finally get home and relax after a long day is quite literally the best. There's no better feeling than when you kick off your work shoes or workout sneakers after hours at work, running a bunch of errands on your feet, or a strenuous workout.

The new "Terminal A" facility is sized 170,000 ft2 (15,800 m2) and is able to handle the world's largest passenger ships of the OASIS-class. According to the MoU (memorandum of understanding) between Royal Caribbean and Miami-Dade County, the Terminal's completion date was July 31, 2018. By the deal, RCCL leased the land and financed the whole project. RCCL was responsible for the Terminal's design and construction of the facilities (including parking garages with combined capacity 1000 vehicles).

The tailor-made (fully assembled) bridges were for the renovated "Terminal F’". Each of these 2-ton walkways is 4-sectioned (telescopic) and has length 32 m (105 ft). The bridges were designed by Adelte (Spain) and custom-made for "Terminal F" - to serve large liners with LOA length over 300 m (984 ft). In 2017 started discussions for turnaround operations by vessels of Virgin Voyages and NCL-Norwegian. However, Carnival Cruise Line remained the Port’s largest customer (2+ million passengers in 2017).

The 2018-signed MoU agreement received approval from Miami-Dade's Commissioners on April 9, 2019 and the deal was officially signed on September 19, 2019. MSC designed and started construction works on a large building (to serve its two cruise terminals - AA, AAA) plus two new berths. For the terminal's design was contracted Arquitectonica (global architecture, landscape and interior design company). The port’s recent infrastructure expansion added three new cruise terminals with ongoing construction of future facilities. The port is also finalizing its Shore Power Program that will give the port the capability to plug three cruise ships into shore power. This will allow a cruise ship to turn off their primary engines while docked, reducing air emissions.

From the Airport:

For this particular project was established the subsidiary PoweCon USA. When completed (2023-Q4), the combined shore-power system will be the world's largest. On December 9, 2018 (Sunday), the port reported its ultimate one-day record for cruise shipping traffic - 52,000 passengers. Based on 2016 passenger traffic numbers reported by CLIA, Miami cruise port was ranked world's largest (4,898 million pax). Follows the list of world's busiest cruise ports with annual shipping traffic over 1 million passengers.

Take the Metrorail's Orange Line to downtown Miami's Freedom Tower stop (about 30 minutes). From there, hop on Miami Trolley's Coral Way route to take you the rest of the way. The trolley drops off at the port every 15 to 20 minutes from early until mid-evening all days except Sunday. All garages and Lot 2 offer day parking and short-term parking. You'll need to find somewhere else to park and then take a taxi or shuttle to the terminal. Royal Caribbean offers seasonal cruises from Boston to Canada and New England from the Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Cruise Terminal.

The system is a public-private partnership for reducing in-port ship accidents (by over 50%) and transit delays for commercial shipping traffic. PortMiami's annual benefit from the PORTS system was estimated at around USD 300 million. The system serves a total of 31 US seaports, supporting 85% of the USA's cargo shipping traffic. PortMiami has capacity to handle the world's biggest passenger ships and is homeport (turnaround port) for numerous large-sized vessels. However, port's prime shipping business are container ships, ranking it Florida's largest container cargo port and USA's 9th-largest.

Terminal A is the brand new cruise terminal Royal Caribbean opened in 2018 that serves as its primary cruise terminal. When there is more than one Royal Caribbean ship in port, they will use other terminals, such as Terminal G. It can be tempting to select an early flight on disembarkation day.

For comparison, the Port's annual revenues are US$1,2M (from cargo activities) and US$9,5M (from cruise shipping). PortMiami's MSC terminals AA and AAA can serve 2 turnarounds/homeported ships simultaneously and have max capacity passengers daily. Miami is also among the most fortunate ports where newest cruise ships make show-off visits and many schedule inaugural homeporting seasons. Port's facilities are among the most modern, providing easy processing and boarding. PortMiami serves 20+ cruise companies and 60+ different passenger ships. Known as “The Crown of Miami” this cruise terminal is operated by RCI in collaboration with Miami-Dade County.

Directions to Port of Miami

The new terminal was officially opened/inaugurated on December 7, 2017, MSC Seaside's scheduled dock in PortMiami was on December 21, 2017. On November 15, 2022, RCG-Royal Caribbean Group signed a 36-year lease agreement that includes developing and exclusive operation of PortMiami's Terminal G. Miami Cruise Terminal J was built with smaller luxury cruise line passengers in mind – Azamara, Regent Seven Seas & Oceania. Cruise Terminal A – the Crown of Miami –  was built specifically for Royal Caribbean in 2018, enabling it to handle Royal’s largest ships with the latest technology for an expedited check-in process. PortMiami is situated on Biscayne Bay and supports 335,000 direct and indirect jobs. Miami International Apirport is just eight miles away from PortMiami.

Royal Caribbean formally opened its new cruise terminal in PortMiami with a celebration event held inside Terminal A. On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson (Virgin Group's Founder) and Tom McAlpin (Virgin Voyages' President and CEO) officially announced the plans for a new/exclusive cruise terminal in PortMiami. The new Terminal B has a dedicated waiting hall, separate bar lounge, service area, new parking garage, valet parking area (accessing the building directly). The new terminal building (nicknamed 'Crown of Miami') serves exclusively RCCL/RCG-Royal Caribbean Group-owned ships. MSC Terminal AAA (completed in October 2022) has capacity to handle MSC WORLD-Class liners (fleet's ever-largest, with passenger capacity 7000).

Various studies on LNG bunkering were conducted, regarding whether these operations (LNG supply to berthed vessels) to be land or water-side. The port expects to receive its first LNG-powered cruise liner in 2022. Miami Metro is USA's 8th-most populous and 4th-largest, with population around 5,5 million. The city is a leader in international trade, commerce, finance, media, entertainment, arts.

The company also anticipates needing 9,634 construction jobs for the project. Also part of the deal is for construction to resume on Royal Caribbean's new global headquarters. There are also two options for 8-night Southern Caribbean sailings, visiting Labadee, La Romana, Willemstad, Curacao, Oranjestad, Aruba, and Kralendijk, Bonaire.

Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean. Oasis of the Seas will also offer a 10-night Eastern Caribbean Holiday sailing in January 2023, visiting St. Thomas, Antigua, Barbados, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten. PortMiami is located on its own island, Dodge Island, just east of downtown Miami.
